QR Codes on the Rise in Print Magazines

Mobile UX designers and marketing and analytics firm Nellymoser released today a comprehensive study of print magazine action codes. They took the time to review every 2011 issue of the top 100 national magazine titles: all 164,000 pages’ worth. They found a total of 4,400 QR Codes, MicrosoftTags, Spyderlynk SnapTags, BEE Tags, JagTags, Digimarc watermarks and other codes with an iPhone or Android device. For each tag, they scanned and ran the resulting Web page or video. At least give them props for being thorough.

The results show to no surprise that despite their problems, tags are becoming more popular, from an average of two per issue at the beginning of the year to more than six nearing the end.

I think the use of QR codes would skyrocket further if the user could scan the code with their built-in camera instead of having to download an additional app.  Having said that, smart app developers are starting to incorporate scanning capability into their apps whose focus is some other feature. - gt

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

Mobile development environments

I have been using a couple of different tools of late for creating iOS apps. I have been looking for a faster prototyping tool and have recently started using LiveCode. I had used the tool a couple of years back to develop both Mac and Windows apps when it was known as Runtime Revolution. I liked the way you could rapidly prototype and finish an app. Now, with the name change to LiveCode, the focus has shifted to mobile. I’m starting to grow fond of the rapid turnaround I am getting with the graphic rich iPhone app that I am developing. Support for native controls is somewhat limited at the moment but I’m betting it will grow in capability over the next year.

For more of a native type app I have been relying on Appcelerator Titanium which uses Javascript as its programming language and supports most of the native controls on both iOS and Android, All of the interface is developed through code which is a bit confining as you are constantly coding/testing/fixing/testing. LiveCode is a much more visual development environment which allows, at least for me, a much faster turnaround on my ideas.

Just thinking on a wintery Friday afternoon.

Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.

I’m fascinated…

I’m just starting to take a look at Tumblr even though I’ve had an account for quite awhile I never did anything with it. I’m thinking it might be a good place to talk about my mobile development adventures and communication in our high tech world in general.

And anything else that might cross my mind.

Plus, my youngest daughter has a Tumblr blog of her incredible artwork!

And my oldest daughter has been wonderfully blogging for a good while now so maybe it’s time for the old man to join in.

P.S. I’m still playing around with my look and feel so don’t be surprised if it changes now and then…
